AROS x86_64 bit

Post by NathanH »

Hi,

You've probably been asked this a million times but reading some of the threads on AROSWorld it looks like 32-bit AROS is pretty much legacy now with all development focusing on 64-bit. Deadwood is writing an emulator so it can also run 32-bit apps and Hollywood itself and its apps are a big part of the discussion. Rather than putting all that work into staying backwards compatible is it possible that AROS x86_64-bit be a supported platform for Hollywood? I'm sure most of the 32-bit Hollywood apps (like all of the RNO ones) would soon follow. For what it's worth, I'm staying on AROS x86_32-bit until 64-bit is supported by Hollywood which probably negates my ask from a business standpoint :o) Thanks for your consideration.

Sure, in the long run this is planned but it's a lot of work because the Amiga backends are currently very much tied to 32-bit so lots of things would have to be changed. Maybe if MorphOS also went 64-bit on an ARM platform or something like this, I'd have more motivation because AROS is only used by very few people so it's not the highest priority here.

Hopefully with 64 bit being now stable, usable and with a very capable modern web-browser, the user base will grow.

Cheers,
Nigel.

A new 64-bit branch of AROS appeared some time ago: support for the Raspberry Pi 3 is already stable. Support for the Raspberry Pi 4 is being worked on, and if it proves possible, the next step will be the RPi 5/500. This seems very promising, as the Raspberry Pi is a platform with a large group of enthusiast users. I know this thread is about 64-bit PCs, but I personally see greater promise in Raspberry Pi support, and I think Hollywood for this platform would be a hit. Since the release of the RPi 500+ with support for NVMe drives, this computer is no longer just a toy, and if the limitations related to limited access to hardware information are overcome, it could be the focus of Amiga system development, but that's just my opinion. It would be nice if Hollywood 12 supported the 64-bit version of AROS on both PC and RPi, but I'll buy the update regardless. :D
