DOES IT TO BE A CODER ????!!!!!
DOES IT TO BE A CODER ????!!!!!
Well well, i am really angry right now... i've just read a thread about DigiBooster 3 beta on amigaworld.net and in the very first comment kas1e says "...after all that Hollywood based products.... it's like a fresh air"... !! that really pi**ed mi off and made me wondering if it is really has ANY sense to be an amiga Hollywood coder... Yes there are some exceptions (LoView, AMC...) but in my experience almost everything i release, I get really stupid negative comments ("exe" is toooo big, it doesn't support this and that...). Especially krashan (G.Kraszewski) seems to really hate Hollywood... I think he is upset that people don't use MUI for coding (he's author of MUI)... anyway, this really steals me power and willing to making new projects... We're just trying to support ALL Amiga flavours which is much easier with Hollywood but maybe it would be better to be just a passive Amiga user like thousands of them around us, they just critise everything released and they do NOTHING for the Amiga themselves....
Re: DOES IT TO BE A CODER ????!!!!!
Well, an error has occured... the title should be "does it have any sense to be a coder"... sorry
Re: DOES IT TO BE A CODER ????!!!!!
I think the quesation is rather what is the purpose of your Hollywood usage.
For compared to most other serious languages it is true that Hollywood is crap if you take into account that Hollywood doesnt have any 3D support and is even on 2D side bit slow.
So I can understand if some hardcore programmer ie. kas1e (although seems he didnt actually complain) would complain about Hollywood being popular lately.
What Hollywood does, it does excellent. But it does have some major shortcomings indeed.
If Hollywood suits your needs, its wonderful, like it is to me.
But if you want to program all kinds of things, starting from 4 Kb Demos. yeah. Hollywood isnt your choice then.

Re: DOES IT TO BE A CODER ????!!!!!
Imho,
Hollywood was REALLY a nice programming language to start programming and for guys(like me) that dont want to bother with includes, dependencies and any other boring programming related things...
However, I think Hollywood needs some improvement to became a MUST:
- Introducing (context)menu support, at least for AmigaOS like system at first...
- Introducing some little GUI elements like lists, sliders, requesters and so...
- Improve its 2D engine to be faster(at least on AmigaOS4/MOS where cpu power wasnt so big atm...)
- add multithreading support or something like it to have the ability to make more complex porjects...
Other things like TCP support was in work for the next(I hope near) release so we have only to wait for have a better Hollywod
Yes, wait, but I hope not so much...also because a more powerfull and "standard" (menu and GUI elements was really the much needed things I think), I'm SURE, will attract MANY prgrammers!
ATM, Hollywood projects was lacking that things that any other (also little) program have like menu's, GUI, and so seems crappy...and I'm a bit in accord with it unfortunately...Holywood programs seems to much an SDL/Linux port and that wasnt necessarly a bad thing but however not necessarly a nice thing...
For the "exe is too big" I simply ignore that...today cpu power and mem suze was really too big for that ridiculous statement!
For example I made a little program to switch my wb backdrops and for few lines of code was 2MB, but who matter? It works and dont crash anytime so its fine fomr me
Have and happy life with Hollywood!
And plz Andreas, improve Hollywood ASAP!

@Tuxedo: I think the same thing...
Re: DOES IT TO BE A CODER ????!!!!!
Well I decided to stand up against kas1e on AW as he is the main offender.

As for the comments above, sure we can wish for Andreas to add more functions to the core language you must also bare in mind its not really a language for creating applications for one-singular platform.
I mention that because I'd love to be able to build Reaction GUIs using Hollywood and screw MorphOS and OS3 support - however by the very definitive - Hollywood is all about Multimedia - not applications per se. So bringing it around to what I want from a Multimedia perspective is integrated support for playing ALL MP3s and M4A as well video formats such as AVI/MP4/OGG etc...

@djrikki
youe are right but since Hollywood can give us the ability to do little and not so little wb tools, I think that getting a niative GUI support (for the AmigaOS-like systems with MUI natuarally) adn menu will be only usefull and give to Hollywood the ability to integrate better in the system its launched...
