Hi!
I have just deleted the spammer users from our newsgroup and closed the group.
I closed it accidentally because missed that it is a one way setting. What a great feature!

(The whole yahoogroups site is a mess with IBrowse.)
So from this time only invited members can join. This is bad for the spammers, but I think bad for us all.
Now the question is: Could we live with a closed Hollywood newsgroup and advertise somehow the way to enter, or should I delete and recreate the group with moderated join policy?
What do you think?

Hi,
I'm not familiar with Yahoo groups but wouldn't it be possible to simply change the group settings from "closed" to "moderated join policy"? Did you contact someone at Yahoo about it? I can hardly imagine that it's not possible to change this without having to recreate the complete list.

You've got the right idea, Andreas. On both of the groups that I own, I have the new members automatically default to override their posting privileges to "moderated". That means that I have to always check my email on a regular basis in case a new user posted. If the first post is spam, I delete the user and their post.

I checked this again, and it really seems that the "closed group" setting can't be undone through the web interface. This is really bad

So currently, no users will be able to join us unless they receive a personal invitation, which is really bad, because they don't know who to contact.
I'm not sure how we should proceed. We could close the group and re-open it but this would mean that all previous messages would get lost, which sucks.
Maybe the support at Yahoo could help us?
@Lazi: Did you try to contact Yahoo support about the problem? Maybe they can undo this setting. There is a "customer care" section at Yahoo which you could use to contact the support. Here is a link:

Hello Andreas
I was very busy recently, so I did not took any step with this problem.
I will check it and try some contact in the weekend.
The good news is that I have a backup AFAIK all of the messages here.

Ok.

Well, I have that, too. But the problem is: We can't put all those messages in the list's archives at Yahoo, can we? If we create a new list, the list archive will start at October 2007. So there is no way to put all the old messages from Jan. 06 to Sept. 07 in there AFAIK.
Let's hope Yahoo can help us with this problem.
