Apple goes ARM

Post by LarsB »

Hi, what do you think about Apple using the ARM architcture in future? Will there be a Hollywood Version?

Sure but rumour has it that macOS will sooner or later be as padlocked as iOS, i.e. in a few years it might happen that it will only be possible to install apps through the App Store. Once that happens, it will be difficult for Hollywood to survive on macOS, but let's just hope it's not going to happen.

Yes, but native arm runs faster of course. As Hollywood can compile for ARM (linux) anyway, I thought to follow this up :)

It does not matter these days the underline cpu . Just the tools you use

I guess andreas using official dev tools from apple so moving needs relative little work.

Its all about free time of andreas not cpu itself.

macOS ARM support is planned but of course it would also mean that all plugins would have to be recompiled for macOS ARM and that's quite some work, especially because Apple is deprecating APIs all the time so it might be necessary to make code changes to make it compile. Also, I've heard that on ARM macOS all applications need to be codesigned which means that Hollywood would have to support that as well.
