AIBOT (game) released

AIBOT game released

AIBOT is a test game of an educational game idea I have been having for some time aimed at teaching coding principles to player.
It was made for Christiandevs Speedgame 2018 competition and received an honorable mention.

You can see a bit about the game from this Apostolic Game Designers video about speedgames (AIBOT starts at 6:20): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTbgtoV ... e=youtu.be

at start, AIBOT is available through Indiego Appstore:
http://aros-broadway.de/indiego/styled-25/index.html

I will at later point also upload this to Aminet, but in effort to show support to Hollywood made Indiego Appstore, it is available from there for now.

AIBOT is available to all main Amigas (OS3, OS4, MorphOS, AROS) and also Windows. If there is interest to Mac and Linux versions, I can make them too.
Notice that this was made using shortcuts here and there, and hence the graphics are very heavy as i used layers and for example maps are simply made by placing another brush layer beside each other without combining them into one brush or something, so you need very powered up machine to have a chance for this to work on OS3.

Go now and download it to your favorite machine from Indiego Appstore!

Congratulations for second place in that contest. Definitely an original concept!

I was on second place only in that videomakers opinion. I actually did quite bad in the competition, receiving only honorable mention.

But that was probably not because the game wasnt good, but because there was a crash bug in that game that seems to have happened on everyone else but on my machine, and it happened all the time to the rest making the game to some extent unplayable and i suppose some werent able to test the game properly at all, since this one guy who pointed me out about the problem and helped me fix it told me that he couldnt get past tutorial level 2 at all until i fixed the issue.

On top of that, it seems itch.io has unfair point system as well. For i received less number of score votes than most (possibly because some didnt vote based upon not being able to play because of that crash bug), so itch.io automatically makes your score lower compared to ones with more votes. That affected my results too since i was categorically getting half a point less in 1-5 scale scoring.

I guess had there not been that crash bug, i could have got on top 3, maybe even win some category.

Game is now available from both Aminet: http://aminet.net/search?query=aibot

And through direct download links from Indiego Appstore:

AOS3: http://indiego.rocks/file/downloadApp/6 ... a33e094bd5

AOS4: http://indiego.rocks/file/downloadApp/1 ... e992ebd214

AROS: http://indiego.rocks/file/downloadApp/5 ... 8c6ea3a1c7

MorphOS: http://indiego.rocks/file/downloadApp/9 ... 3b827f369c

Windows: http://indiego.rocks/file/downloadApp/1 ... dfae55b010

Let me know, for example by replying here, if you encounter any Crash Bugs.

It would also be interesting to know if anyone is able to run this on AOS3 machine, and what were the specs of that machine.

See game in action from this Apostolic Game Designers video about speedgames 2018 (AIBOT starts at 6:20): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTbgtoV ... e=youtu.be

And any feedback from game itself is also appreciated as I made it as a test game to see if this educational game idea has potential or not to make a commercial version out of it.

This game shows the core idea of what I am after very well, but naturally due to time limit (about 2 weeks) the competition had, it doesnt get very far, for the main idea of this game would be to put player to fight with his own made AI against computer AIs, however, since I didnt get enough commands programmed, there was no possibility for player to make any sensible AI and hence this game ended more like a puzzle game of reach target area with your code.

Looks really nice and polished. Is it made up for easily lokalize it?

Not easy, but not too difficult either. There are less than 3 000 lines of code in total to go through, and as long as you pay attention, they should be fairly easy to spot when there is some text that you would replace with localized text.

However, some text are also in actual images. You could replace them by simply using some graphics editor, but do notice that i originally wrote all those text in paper and scanned from there to get the cartoon text feel to them, but then again, i did some spelling errors etc. so replacing them even with some font would not hurt too much the end result.

All in all, point is that the competition gave only 2 weeks of time to make the code for the game. Therefore I reused some of my old codes, which results in some pieces of code being there that are not actualyl even used, and i also used some quick tricks to get around some issues, hence the code is somewhat messy and not very efficient, as being able to make things quick was the key issue, not the performance.

But all in all I think it is quite readable code and localizing is very much doable by making different version of the game. Actually I dont think it would necessarily be even terribly much to do an actual localization where you could pick your language to be used, since at least close to all text go through some function, and hence you would simply alter the function to pick the right language.
